The Cannes 2020 Virtual Festival selects 4 animated productions

The organizers of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival have announced the 56 selections for this year's virtual film conference in live streaming on Wednesday. This includes four highly anticipated animated productions, drawn from a record 2.067 films submitted for this year.

The animated selections include the new and original Pixar original. soul, directed by Pete Docter and Studio Ghibli's CGI debut film Aya to Majo, directed by Goro Miyazaki and based on Diana Wynne Jones " Earwig and the witchas well as compelling and artistic European gems: Jonas Poher Rasmussen's animated documentary which delves into the complex and emotional experience of a man as a refugee of Aghani who came to Denmark as a child, Scappae Josep, the first feature film by French artist Aurel (Aurélien Froment): a beautifully crafted and deeply moving portrait of the Catalan artist, a Spanish Civil War soldier, a concentration camp fugitive, a blacklisted luminary and unrecognized Josep Bartolí .

Festival director Thierry Frémaux noted in his 2020 selection message that the selection committee has seen an increase in the number of first films (15 selected this year, compared to 10 in 2019), a continued expansion of the range of geographical representation. of films (147 countries this year, compared to 138 in 2019) and measures to achieve 50/50 gender parity for competing directors: this year, 532 female directors presented films (25,7%), less than Last year, but others were included in the official selection: 16 in 2020 compared to 14 in 2019 and only six in 2015.

“This selection is here and it's beautiful,” wrote Frémaux. “Although the theaters have been closed for three months, for the first time since the invention of the film by the Lumière brothers on December 28, 1895, this selection reflects that cinema is more alive than ever. It remains unique, irreplaceable. We live in a world where moving images are constantly changing, whether we talk about the way films are shown or the films themselves. Cinema makes the difference, thanks to those who make it, to those who give it life and to those who receive it and make it glorious. “Coming soon in a theater near you”: the formula has never been so convincing. We will see soon: cinema is not dead, it is not even sick “.

The selections in the competition for short films and Cinefondation program will be announced shortly. Cannes will also present a virtual Marché du Film this year due to the ongoing pandemic: more information at www.marchedufilm.com.
