Chris Claremont makes his long-awaited debut on X-MEN LEGENDS in February

Chris Claremont will write a story centered on Excalibur in the twelfth issue of Legends of the X-Men this February. Marvel has officially revealed the details for its long-awaited debut on the title.

Together with the artist Scott Eaton, Claremont will revisit an era during its unprecedented run on the franchise, set prior to his work on the Excalibur spinoff title and featuring iconic X-Men characters including Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, Mystique and Destiny.

Here's how Marvel describes it Legends of the X-Men #12:

In the aftermath of "Fall of the Mutants," the X-Men are dead. Or so the world believes. And Mystique seeks revenge on Forge for her role in the loss of Rogue. To prevent her partner from making a serious mistake, Destiny will have to recruit Nightcrawler and Shadowcat who, injured as they are, must dig deep to find new strength and do what's right like the last surviving X-Men!

"It's always fun to go back along existing paths and above all have the opportunity to fill in a couple of interesting gaps that were initially skipped along the way, closing a meaningful story arc and lighting the fire that ignites the series that follows," he said Claremont. "Talk about a delight!"

Earlier this year the Simonsons teamed up for a two-issue X-Factor story in Legends of the X-Men # 3-4. Other creators who worked on the series highlighting different eras of X-Men history include Fabian Niceza, Todd Nauck, Larry Hama, and Phillip Tan.

Fans will remember that Marvel released a Chris Claremont anniversary one-shot in honor of the comic creator's career at the House of Ideas.
