Today we are pleased to announce that the Fokker F. VII aircraft, the second aircraft in our "Local Legends" series, is now available in Microsoft flight simulator. The series celebrates the history of aviation and the releases always coincide with each global update. Local legends are locally famous aircraft but may not be as well known to a world audience.
The F. VII, produced by Fokker of the Netherlands, is one of the greats in the history of aircraft. It advanced the world of aviation during the golden age of flight of the 20s and 30s due to its strength, reliability, power and load capacity. The F.VII, which first took off on November 24, 1924 and was introduced to the public in 1925, served in the early airline industry, moving cargo, transporting air mail and exploring.
Originally designed as a single-engine airplane, the high-wing F.VII was produced primarily as a triple engine, powered by three 6-cylinder Wright J-9 Whirlwind radial engines delivering 300 horsepower each. With a range of 750 miles, a cruising speed of 111 mph, and a take-off and landing run of just under 750 feet, the F. VII proved to be ideal for numerous scenarios.
Capable of carrying up to 8 passengers, totaling nearly 5.000 pounds of cargo, or a combination of the two, the Fokker F. VII has become famous for a number of airmail, passenger and freight lines. The F.VII was also the aircraft of choice for numerous explorers on expeditions across continents, oceans and adventures in the polar regions and other unexplored regions. The Fokker F. VII is a magnificent and emblematic icon from the dawn of the aviation world, one of the few that has captured the imagination around the world and enjoys a lasting legacy.

Southern Cross
The famous Southern Cross is the Fokker F. VIIb / 3m aircraft that has completed one of aviation's greatest firsts, the ambitious Pacific Ocean crossing: 7.250 miles from Oakland, California, to Brisbane, Australia. Nine days after their start, while battling storms, exhaustion and equipment malfunctions, the four pilots reached Brisbane, Queensland in Australia.
To cross the Pacific, the aviators sailed Southern Cross on a route that took them first to Hawaii, then to an incredible 3.167-mile leg, 34 hours of the journey to Fiji - the first time a plane landed on the island - and finally to Brisbane. Historians say that the success was due as much to the Southern Cross as to the four who piloted it.
Friendship
The Friendship is the Fokker F. VIIb / 3m which crossed the Atlantic Ocean in June 1928 with the future famous aviator Amelia Earhart as a passenger. The triple-engine took just over 20 hours to sail, departing from Trepassey Harbor, Newfoundland, and landing in Burry Port, Wales. The flight of the high-wing monoplane helped to indelibly mark the Fokker F.VII line of aircraft in the annals of history as one of the first true greats of aviation.
Josephine Ford
The Josephine Ford is a Fokker F. VIIa / 3m flown by Richard Evelyn Byrd on his daring expedition to the North Pole on May 9, 1926. At that point in history, the North Pole had never been reached by a plane. While doubts remain about the success of the attempt, it remains one of the great adventures of the dawn of aviation, and the one that proved the Fokker F. VIIa / 3m triple-engine as one of the icons of the golden age of flight.
Fokker F.VIIa
The Fokker F.VIIa is a single-engine monoplane manufactured by the Dutch airline Fokker. The F.VIIa, one of the world's first transport aircraft, was slightly larger than Fokker's original F.VII and also sported a number of technical improvements, including a heated cabin. The plane, which could carry up to eight passengers or 1.750 pounds of cargo, took its maiden flight on March 12, 1925. A total of 36 F.VIIa were produced and formed an integral part of a number of airlines flying on routes. throughout Europe and many other parts of the globe.
KLM livery
The Fokker F. VII proved to be a historically critical aircraft for Dutch airline KLM during its birth period. The first F.VII, painted in the distinctive KLM blue livery, was delivered to the airline in 1924 by Anthony Fokker. This aircraft was used on the first ever flight from the Netherlands to the Dutch East Indies. F. VII allowed the airline to thrive and laid the foundation for what would become one of the world's leading air carriers.
