QUAY BROTHERS: IN ABSENTIA AND KWARTET SMYCZKOVY WITH ARDITTI QUARTET & SKALPEL
The KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival closes its twelfth edition with the UK premiere of avant-garde filmmakers Stefano e Timothy quayLast movie Kwartet Smyczkovy, next to their highly suggestive and chilling piece In the absence - with live musical accompaniment by Arditti quartet.
Commissioned by the BBC in 1999, In the absence presents an otherworldly composition of the experimental music giant Karlheinz Stockhausen. Twenty minutes long, the film combines live action and animation to convey the mental landscape of a lost and mad woman writing letters from a bleak cell in the scratchy black and white mode of long ago.
The new film by The Quay Brothers Kwartet Smyczkovy was inspired by Peter HandkeThe game in an act without words The time we knew nothing of each other and presents the late Polish composer LutosławskiThe only string quartet. The Quay Brothers reacts to the melodic overlaps and flickering micro-rhythms of the composition with stiff and eerie twilit images.
