Disney closes Ice Age Blue Sky studio

La Walt Disney Co., acquired the Blue sky studios, as part of its $ 71,3 billion purchase of 20th Century Fox in 2019 and stands officially closing the animation studio of Greenwich, Connecticut, founded in 1987. Blue Sky grossed $ 5,9 billion for Fox in 13 CGI animated films, including blockbusters THEIce Age , Rio , science fiction hit Robots, the Oscar nominee Ferdinand and the comedy of friends swapping bodies Undercover lights, released nine months after the Disney-Fox merger.

The studio had planned to adapt Noelle Stevenson's graphic novel Nimona, directed by Oscar winner Patrick Osborne, for a 2022 version. Production has stopped and the film, which had 10 months of work ahead, will not be produced. An anonymous spokesperson for the studio told the outlet: "Given the current economic realities, after much consideration and evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close the film production operations at Blue Sky Studios."

The doors of Blue Sky will officially close in April. Disney will reportedly work with 450 interested employees to explore open positions at other in-house studios, such as Walt Disney Animation, Pixar and 20th Century Animation.

Blue Sky Studios was founded by Chris Wedge, Michael Ferraro, Carl Ludwig, Alison Brown, David Brown and Eugene Troubetzkoy when their former employer, technician and visual effects house MAGI, closed down. The studio went from commercial work to creating animated cockroaches Joe's Apartment (1996). After receiving a majority stake from 20th Century Fox's VIFX in 1997, Blue Sky created animated characters for films such as Alien resurrection, Fight Club e Star Trek: Insurgency, prior to Wedge's CG animated short, which won an Oscar for the film Bunny pushed the studio into animation productions.
